Game Design Document - Drive Baby Drive!

Game Design Document - Drive Baby Drive!

Created by Megan Kelly

To start off my game is called “Drive Baby Drive!” I came up with the idea during brainstorming a few weeks ago. It suddenly came to my head as I don’t have much gaming experience and the ones I do are mostly simple games that I played when I was younger or games available on the app store! So when it came to my head I was very happy, I thought it was doable with the skills and time I have! The game will be set in a rural setting. There will be a road and you will have to avoid obstacles on the road. You can, of course, drive off-road but there will be more things to crash into. While driving you have to collect coins on the track. There will be a timer counting down and you will have to collect the coins in the time. The car will be going fast to make it harder.

Game Introduction

Genre
The genre of the game would be a mix of racing and vehicle simulator. I would mix the two as you aren’t racing other people but you are still racing against the clock and trying to complete the requirements during that time. It’s like if you were to mix temple run and a car game.
GamePlay
For the gameplay, you spawn at the same point every time you start the game. When the game starts you will see it count down from 3 when it counts down you will be able to start your game. The timer will start counting down. You will need to collect all the coins before the timer runs out in order to win. You will have to avoid obstacles placed all around the track. If you hit obstacles its game over. If you don’t collect enough coins in the game before the timer runs out it is also game over. If you win there will be an end win screen saying you’ve won and if you lose there will be an end screen saying you’ve lost.
Target audience & platforms
The primary target for this game would have to be anyone who is looking for a game to play maybe while going to work, college or school. It's not something you would have to really think about while playing there for I think any age could play it. There will be no mature content so it is okay for kids, I would say 10+.
Look and Feel
The game will look like you're in the countryside on a sort of dirt track. The track will be lower down and then there will be almost like a wall around it but it will just be terrain at different levels. This will make it look more authentic looking. There will be trees on the outskirt of the track and in the middle.

Story

Drive Baby Drive! is a simple driving game, you have to drive around a track and collect coins in a certain time in order to win

How to Play

There are very few instructions on how to play the game, below is how you play.

-The player uses the arrow keys to move

-The left arrow to go left, the right arrow to go right, the up arrow to go forward and the down arrow to go backwards.

Artwork (design)

The artwork of the game will be that of a simple nature. It is to have a dirt like terrain covering the ground with trees surrounding it. Around the track where the trees are placed there will be green grass.

There will be a blue sky to mimic being outside.

You will see the car you are driving, it will be a sports car.

Technical Requirements

There won't be anything too technical in the game, therefore, it will be available on most PCs and Macs.

Heads Up Display (HUD)

For the heads up display, there will be one for coins and one for the time.

Therefore it will always display how many coins you have collected and how many are left e.g 5/10. This will be displayed at the top left of the screen

For the time it will always be counting down the time until the game is over. This will be displayed on the top right of the screen.

Characters

There are no characters in my game. You will only be able to play as the one car.

Level Design

There will only be the one level in this game. Once you finish/lose the game that's it it's over.

Global Elements

For the game the camera view is going to be in the third person, meaning the camera will be behind the player. It will be above the player, looking down.

There will be boundaries at the edge of the area, so in theory, you can drive outside the track but if you go to the edge you will die.

There won't be a background but a skybox so when on the track you will see around you and then the sky.

Player View

The camera is in a fixed position behind the player in a third-person point of view. It will follow the player wherever it goes. It will be above the player too an an angle looking down.

Game Flow Chart

Audio & Sound F/x

In terms of audio and sound for the game, there will be no music playing during it. Though, I will have royalty-free background noises. These will be like birds chirping, wind blowing, car horns and train noises.

I will have a sound effect when the coins are collected too.

There will also be a sound effect when the player crashes the car.

Technical Requirements

I aim for the game to run at a smooth pace for most computers, there won't be much sound or audio.

Player Elements

In terms of the player, the only sounds will be made is from the car engine, when they collect a coin and if they crash there will be a crashing noise.

Global Elements

For the overall gameplay sounds, there will be ambient sounds. There won't be any background music. I will have nature sounds in the background and other cars and trains.

Technical

The game is going to be made using Unity. It will only be available for PC/Mac users. You will need a working keyboard in order to play the game. More specifically the four arrow keys.

User Interface (controls)

The player uses the up arrow key to move forward.

The player uses the down arrow key to move backwards.

The player uses the right arrow key to turn right.

The player uses the left arrow key to turn left.
